Remains of the Quake

bricks3In 1906, when a massive earthquake shook San Francisco, the devastating fires that followed truly did most of the damage, obliterating the city. But the city rebuilt with astonishing speed, and in today’s SF, an amazing percentage of homes were constructed in the years from 1906 to 1908. My home was built in 1906, right after the disaster, and it features something else that can be found scattered throughout the city: bricks salvaged from buildings that were destroyed in the earthquake and fires. Bricks all over bear the scars of catastrophe, burnt, bubbling and sometimes charred.
